Searching for the Voice

I was around six years old—though like all early childhood memories, this recollection is likely reconstructed from fragments and family stories—when Dad brought home the stereo, a cassette player with two speakers that seemed enormous from my height. It was a Saturday afternoon, and he'd just returned from the Christian bookstore with a box full of cassette tapes: Bible stories, worship music, missionary adventures. We were a Christian family, and my father was a godly man who wanted his children to grow up surrounded by truth.

But while my siblings gathered around to listen to the stories, I was transfixed by something else entirely. The voices. They were inside the machine somehow. Real people—singers, storytellers, entire orchestras—had somehow gotten themselves into that wooden box. And I had to know how.

This wasn't just curiosity. This was an emergency. Those people needed to breathe, didn't they? How did they eat? Were they crying for help between songs?

The question consumed me for days. I'd press my ear against the speaker mesh, trying to peer through the tiny holes. Were they hiding behind the fabric? Were they shrunk down somewhere? At six years old, the world was still full of impossible possibilities, and this was a mystery I couldn't let go.

So one morning, while everyone else was busy, I did what any curious child with access to Dad's toolbox would do: I grabbed a screwdriver and decided to find them.

The Great Disassembly

I was methodical about it—even then. This wasn't destruction; it was discovery. Each screw I removed was placed carefully in a line. Each plastic panel was laid out in order on the dining room table. Whether the sensory details I recall—the smell of electronics and dust, the way the morning light caught the copper wires inside—are authentic memories or later embellishments, the drive to understand how things worked was undeniably real.

Layer by layer, I went deeper. Past the outer shell. Past the circuit boards with their mysterious green pathways. Past tangles of red and black wires that looked like the veins I'd seen in my children's encyclopedia. Surely, somewhere in this maze, I'd find the people.

But they weren't there.

I sat surrounded by the stereo's innards, genuinely confused. Where were the singers? Where was the man who told the David and Goliath story? I'd taken apart the entire world of sound, and found only silence and circuits.

That's when Dad walked in.

Two Men and a Thousand Pieces

The look on his face—I'll never forget it. Terror, amusement, and bewilderment all crashed together. His brand-new stereo lay in pieces across the table, carefully dissected by his six-year-old son.

"Paul..." he started, then stopped. Then started again. "What... what were you doing?"

"Looking for the people," I said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

He stood there for a long moment, processing. Then, to my surprise, he didn't yell. Instead, he walked to the phone and called his friend—an electrician who lived a few blocks away.

"You need to see this," was all he said.

An hour later, I watched from the doorway as two grown men sat at our dining table, piecing together what I'd taken apart. They pulled up chairs like surgeons preparing for a delicate operation. Dad's friend would hold up a component, they'd consult together, then carefully place it where they thought it belonged.

"Your boy didn't break a single piece," the electrician said, shaking his head. "He just... catalogued it all."

They worked for two hours, occasionally calling me over to ask where I'd found certain parts. I stood between them, pointing, explaining my process. The electrician kept chuckling. Dad kept sighing. But there was something else in his eyes too—a recognition, maybe. A understanding that his son's mind worked differently.

Eventually, miraculously, they got it working again. When music flowed from those speakers once more, both men cheered. But I was still puzzled. The people still weren't visible. How did they get in there?
